Gaetano D'Angelo, known professionally as Nino, singer-songwriter, actor for theatre and cinema, record and theatre producer, is today one of the best-known and most appreciated representatives of Neapolitan culture. In 1976, thanks to his family's help, Nino manages to record his first 45 rpm single, titled “'A storia mia ('O scippo)”. Then comes the approach to cinema in the early 1980s: success arrives with the films “Lo studente”, “L'Ave Maria” and “Tradimento e Giuramento”. In 1981 he writes one of his greatest hits, “Nu Jeans e 'na Maglietta”, and from there a string of successes.
We are re-sharing some of the artist's answers from the 2018 interview.
Tuttoitalia: Coming back to your music, it is not a given that the most famous songs are always loved by those who wrote them. What is your relationship with the song that changed your life? “I have great respect for 'Nu jeans e 'na maglietta and I always sing it gladly, because I cannot give up performing such a beautiful song. On the contrary, I always thank the inspiration I had that morning when I wrote it. You should know that I also care a lot about the less famous songs; in fact, part of my latest album Nino D'Angelo 6.0 is dedicated to the pieces that the audience liked least, and I called it I miei più grandi insuccessi (My greatest flops). I bring them back because they are part of me regardless.”
Tuttoitalia: What do you think of blending different musical genres? “For the show at the San Paolo, rappers like Rocco Hunt and Clementino came to pay tribute to me and, even though for me music is melody, I admit that experimenting with something new is intriguing. I would be glad to hear young people sing my songs, even using different styles.”
