Alessandro Mahmoud, known as Mahmood, was born in Milan in 1992 to a Sardinian mother and an Egyptian father. After his father left, he grew up in Gratosoglio with his mother and began studying singing and guitar at the age of 12. He took his first steps into the spotlight on X Factor 6, in 2012, where he joined the Under Uomini group. From that moment on his passion for music grew ever stronger and led him to enrol in a school where he studied piano, theory and solfeggio. He supported his studies by working in a bar, his heart firmly tied to his Sardinia and his origins. Three years after discovering his X-Factor, in 2015 he won Area Sanremo with the song “Dimentica”, which would also earn him fourth place in the Nuove proposte category of the Festival in 2016.

Mahmood won the 69th Sanremo Festival in 2019 with the song “Soldi”, overtaking rivals Ultimo and Il Volo. It is one of the tracks on the album Gioventù Bruciata, which entered the FIMI chart at number one. “Soldi”, written together with Dario Faini and Charlie Charles, went Platinum less than a month after its release and stayed at the top of every chart. Mahmood went on to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, held in Tel Aviv. His first live show in his home city, Milan, took place at MI AMI at the end of May.
Also in 2019 came a new hit, “Calipso”, which dominated the charts and was certified Platinum while “Soldi” kept collecting successes: its 100 million streams (39 million of them from abroad) make it the most listened-to Italian song of all time on Spotify and Apple Music, and it appears in more than 1400 playlists around the world.
2022 began for Mahmood with another important test, that of the Ariston stage as a contestant in the 72nd edition of the Sanremo Festival 2022, with the song “Brividi” alongside Blanco. The two artists, who moved audiences and won their favour from the very first evening, took the Sanremo title, and their “Brividi” broke the one-day streaming record on Spotify Italia, reached 5th place in Spotify’s global chart and 1st place in the Top Songs Debut Global and in the rankings of every digital platform.
In 2023 Mahmood was the BBC’s special guest on the final night of the Eurovision Song Contest, the first time in history that an Italian has been invited to the great international event outside the competition. While his streams reached 2.8 billion plays in total, everything was ready for the release of the new single: “Cocktail d’Amore”, written by Mahmood and produced by Dardust, a melancholy ballad about the end of a relationship. 2024 is a big year for the artist: he returns to the Ariston stage for the 74th edition of the Sanremo Festival with the song “Tuta gold”, and between April and May he is busy with his third European Tour. 16 dates that see him perform in the main clubs of 10 European countries, including Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Spain, before closing at the Fabrique in Milan on 17 May.
